Im Jahre 1981 vernichtete ein verheerender Brand einen großen Teil der Produktionshallen des Vitra-Campus. 10 Jahre später befasste sich die Direktion mit dem Bau einer Garage für die Feuerwehrautos nebst Fitness-Raum, Küche und Konferenzraum für die Werksfeuerwehr. 1993 zogen ca. 35 Feuerwehrfrauen- und männer in die von der irakischen Architektin Zaha Hadid errichteten Fire Station.
Die 43-jährige Zaha Hadid errichtete ihr erstes Gebäude und wurde schlagartig weltberühmt. Im Jahre 2004 erhielt sie den renommierten Pritzger-Architekturpreis.

In 1981 a devasting fire destroyed nearly 70% of the production halls. 10 years later the management discussed in detail the construction of a fire station with a big garage for the fire trucks, a fitness room, a conference room and a small kitchen. In 1993 35 firefighters and fire woman were entering the fire station, edified by the 43 years old Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid.
The fire station on the Vitra-Campus was her first building, wich made her worldwide famous. She was the first women, who was awarded with the prestigious Pritzker-Prize in 2004.

Wenn man sich fragt, wie die Architektin zur Komposition der Gebäude-Elemente gelangt ist, dann sollte man einen Blick auf das abstrakte Bild Hadids werfen.
Um den Vitra Campus zu überschauen spazierte sie auf den Tüllinger Hügel und zwischen den Parzellen des Weinbergs. Das muss sie inspiriert haben, denn man kann erkennen, wie einzelne Parzellen auf der Höhe der Werksallee herausgebrochen wurden und sich Richtung Standort der Fire Station bewegen. Aus den Parzellen komponierte sie ihr Gebäude.
Zaha Hadid hat zahlreiche abstrakte Bilder im konstruktivistischen Stil zu ihren Gebäuden gemalt, um ihre Inspiration en zu dokumentieren.

When she visited Vitra-Campus for the first time, to inspect the site, where she should build the fire station, she looked around and saw the Tüllinger Hill. From top of the hill, she would have a fine view to the Campus. She climbed the hill and circulated through the parcels of the vineyard. Maybe she thought to break out some parcels and carry them forward to the site. Inspired by these parcels she composed the design of the fire station.
Finally she painted the picture and afterwards shaped the design of her building.
